In the last decade, the number of patent applications have dramatically increased, particularly in the medical sector with around 9000 patent applications. In the past decade the number of patent applications in the medical industry has doubled, whereas the number of applications in the pharmaceutical industry has decreased by 15% in a single year.
Of all the European countries applying for patents in the medical industry, Germany has the highest number of applications (33,181), followed by France (12,107), Switzerland (7,786), England (6,464) and the Netherlands (6,178).
