On July 30, 2012, The U.S. Chamber of Commerce announce the launch of IP Delivers, an educational campaign highlighting the fundamental value of intellectual property to the development of innovative and creative economies across the globe. The IP Delivers program is committed to promoting the rights of innovators and creators around the world who are generating jobs, spurring economic growth, and delivering breakthrough solutions to global challenges.

According to the Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC), the IP Delivers program aims to raise awareness about the importance of intellectual property as a factor of innovation. By extension, it also raises awareness about the role of IP in job creation, economic growth and consumer protection from organized crime. “Innovative and creative industries - from technology to pharmaceutical, entertainment to consumer products and apparel to aerospace – rely on intellectual property to deliver innovation and economic development” said David Hirschmann, President and CEO of the GIPC. In the United States alone, these industries employ 55 million Americans and contribute more than 5.8 trillion in output. “IP Delivers will advocate for effective and robust IP policies around the world, which will help bring investment, innovation, and jobs to all nations large and small,” he said.

James Pooley, deputy director general of innovation and technology sectors at the World Intellectual Property Organization and the main speaker during the launch on July 30, hailed the program as a “very much needed campaign.”  He also said the concept of IP protection was not universally understood, and one of the aims of the IP Delivers campaign was to keep IP principles easy to grasp and to stay away from legal or technical jargon. “The more we talk about right holders … the less people understand,” he said. Prior to joining WIPO, Pooley was a prominent US patent attorney and is rumored to be a candidate for WIPO director general in 2014.

The Chamber’s Global Intellectual Property Center is working to champion intellectual property rights as vital to creating jobs, saving lives, advancing global economic growth and generating breakthrough solutions to global challenges.
